The constitution is under threat. Each and every citizen of the country has the responsibility to uphold its sanctity. Majority of the public are aware of this situation. But how can a citizen uphold the sanctity of the constitution?
We have an answer. We will do something in our own way, a unique way. We have decided to organise a mega event in the capital of Kerala named ‘We, the PEOPLE’ to uphold constitutional supremacy. We plan to express our solidarity with the constitution through songs, poetry, games, entertainment programmes, theatre and film. The programme organised before the Government Secretariat will commence from the 8th and go on till 13th of November. It will culminate with a grand gala event of large gathering amounting to thousands of citizens from all walks of life, at the Central Stadium, behind the Secretariat.
We have realised that the general feeling and impression conveyed by the media around the country after the recent verdict in the Sabarimala issue was that the dominant voice in Kerala were of those who had an anti women, anti constitutional mind set. The reality is that such a retrograde view point had the support of a minority but indeed vociferous section of the population. Unfortunately, this minority could make themselves more visible because they represented the vested interests of the upper crust of the society for whom change is always an anathema.
The general public has now woken up to its looming danger. They have taken up the task of making themselves more visible coalescing the voices of a cross section of people from the on the streets to the erudite and wise and from the law abiding to the legal luminaries. Now Kerala is waking up to ensure that our country, it’s Constitution, the rights of the citizen, judicial system, dignity, equality, and the right for freedom are protected. Kerala is really awakening to a new era of scientific temper and rational thinking. Kerala is getting ready to recreate its true strength and character that was well evident during the unprecedented floods that ravaged this beautiful piece of earth.
We have selected magenta to be the theme colour of the event. All materials used in the programme including those used for publicity will be in hues of magenta. In a way, this can be termed as the start of a magenta revolution. We are drawing inspiration from the Renaissance values our forefathers left us with the independence and allied movements. The expenses of this mega event are met by crowd funding.
‘We, the PEOPLE’ are igniting a flame in the state capital that will spread to the whole of the country. Countless number of families is rallying around to safeguard the Constitution and our liberty. We are not gathering under any banner. This is a get together for safeguarding the freedom, equality, modern values and secularism the populace of this Nation had enjoyed for the past 70 years. We claim to be initiating a passive resistant movement from this tip of this nation, which we hope will spread to rest of the country.
It all started from the meeting of 28 people on the 28th of October. We under the banner of HUMANS were trying to find answers to the fake propaganda aimed at dividing the society. The discussion culminated in the master plan of the task of making the visible the real voices of the people on the streets, in public and in the media. We put this plan before like minded people and organisations.
The response was really overwhelming. Then two more meetings happened -on October 31st and November 2nd. After these deliberations, now it has grown up into a large movement. This movement has no leader, banner, and colour. Not even an organisation including HUMANS. It’s really a movement of the people, by the people, for the people!!
What is there is the wish of the people for a safe and secure life. Kerala is getting ready to exhibit its true strength and character. I will there with my family and friends. You also join with friends and family to celebrate constitutions throughout the streets of Thiruvananthapuram city on 13th November. The celebration of democracy will be without obstructing the traffic, without infringing the freedom of others, adhering to the green protocol. This celebration of democracy will truly be a model.
